Beautiful message from the Church bulletin on January 20th to share:

Living in Gratefullness

I would hazard a guess that most of us would agree that is a very good thing to have a grateful heart. Brother David Steindl-Rast has taken on the advancement and notion of gratefullness almost as a life project. He feels strongly that gratefullness is an effective method for moving humanity forward. Brother David speaks of gratefullness as "our full appreciation of something altogether unearned, utterly gratuitous: life, existence, ultimate belonging. Literally, it is great-full-ness".

Yes, there is a great fullness in all of creation. For most of us it would only take a few minutes of concentrated reflection to name hundreds of things for which we are grateful, starting from our very lives and bodies, through to the wonderful beauty and mystery we find in nature, or the great comfort and love we feel from our friends and family. The list would never stop if we started naming every last thing for which we need to give thanks.

But, many of us are rarely aware that all is gift. One day pretty much looks like the next. Everything is familiar. Nothing much jolts us out of our everydayness. But every so often, something may catch us off guard - a remarkable sunset, a wonderful piece of music, a beautiful face,. For a moment or two we are spontaneously brought to a new way of seeing creation.

These are wonderful moments and we shouldn't easily pass them by. Good photographers and great artists make these moments the stuff of their work. At times we need such artists to help us see in a new way. Walking through an art gallery or listening to a beautiful piece of music can be moments well spent. We need to somehow take those wonderful moments, as well as the day-to-day experiences we all have, and turn them into food for our spirit.

Stand at the crossroads and look ... ask where the good way is, and walk in it, and you will find rest for your souls.
